IIT Roorkee Allows Students Below 75% Marks to Apply for JEE Advanced Admissions

New Delhi: In a significant relief for thousands of JEE Advanced qualifiers, IIT Roorkee has permitted students who fall short of the Class 12 eligibility threshold of 75 per cent marks to participate in the IIT admission process, provided they submit a revised scorecard meeting the requirement by July 15, 2026.

The move comes amid mounting pressure from students and parents dissatisfied with CBSE Class 12 results declared on May 13, with lakhs of candidates claiming they received marks lower than expected and subsequently applying for re-evaluation.

What IIT Roorkee Has Announced

IIT Roorkee, the organising institute for JEE Advanced 2026, stated that students whose Class 12 marks are below 75 per cent — applicable to General, OBC-NCL, and GEN-EWS categories — or below 65 per cent for SC, ST, and PwD categories, may fill in their college and course choices at this stage. Seats will be allocated to them based on their JEE Advanced rank.

However, such candidates must email their revised scorecard — reflecting the required percentage — to orgjee@iitr.ac.in by July 15, 2026. Admission will be confirmed only upon receipt of the qualifying scorecard, for whichever seat is allocated after the fourth round of counselling.

Background: CBSE Results Trigger Student Discontent

The issue gained national attention following CBSE’s declaration of Class 12 board results on May 13. A large number of students, particularly from science streams, expressed shock and disappointment over scores significantly below expectations, prompting widespread demands for re-evaluation and marking scheme reviews.

IIT Roorkee had on June 1 released the final list of 56,880 candidates who qualified for IIT admissions along with their rankings. However, many among them found themselves ineligible due to the 75 per cent Class 12 cut-off, despite clearing one of the country’s most competitive entrance exams.

IIT Roorkee’s Stand on Relaxing the Criteria

Students have been vocal across social media platforms, demanding a one-time waiver of the 75 per cent eligibility condition. IIT Roorkee, however, had on June 4 clarified to a news agency that a blanket relaxation was not feasible, noting that JEE Advanced is taken by students from 36 different Boards across the country, and the criteria cannot be eased solely for the benefit of students from one particular Board.

Re-evaluation Process Underway

Meanwhile, a total of 4,04,319 applications have been submitted by students seeking re-evaluation of their answer sheets, covering 11,31,961 answer sheets across multiple subjects. The re-evaluation process is currently ongoing.

Students hopeful of an improvement in their scores through re-evaluation now have until July 15 to submit their revised marksheet to IIT Roorkee for their admission to be processed.
