Update June 2026: Cabinet Expanded With 12 New Ministers

Himanta Biswa Sarma was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Assam for a second consecutive term on Tuesday during a grand ceremony held in Guwahati. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh were present at the event alongside several senior NDA leaders.

The Assam Council of Ministers was expanded on June 5, 2026, with the induction of 12 new Cabinet Ministers. The swearing-in ceremony was held at the Jyoti-Bishnu Antarjatik Kala Mandir in Guwahati, where Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya administered the oath of office and secrecy to the new ministers in the presence of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and other dignitaries.

The expansion includes four first-time ministers — Ashwini Ray Sarkar, Biswajit Daimary, Nilima Devi, and Susanta Borgohain. Nilima Devi is the only woman among the newly inducted ministers. Keshab Mahanta represents the Asom Gana Parishad, while the remaining 11 ministers belong to the BJP.

With this expansion, the total strength of the Assam Council of Ministers has risen to 17. Under the Constitution, Assam can have a maximum of 19 ministers, including the Chief Minister. The cabinet expansion comes less than a month after the BJP-led NDA government returned to power with a decisive mandate in the Assam Assembly Elections 2026. Portfolio allocation is expected to be announced shortly.
